The EcoAgriFood project is under development by researchers of the Centre of Molecular Environmental Biology of UMinho and it aims the production of green products and processes for the agri-food industry.

24th-26th of January

CBMA – Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology together with the IB-S – Institute for Bio-sustainability will host the DNAqua-Net WG1 Meeting and WG1 Workshop on the 24th-26th of January. In this meeting we will work towards the goals of WG1 in providing consistent taxonomic checklists and a gap analysis of the barcode reference library for the European aquatic biota (i.e. marine and freshwater). After the meeting, WG1 will hold a workshop for invited participants to do practical work on checklists, gap analyses and drafting outlines of papers. More info

From 7 to 9th December took place at  Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto the congress "MICROBIOTEC17: Congress of Microbiology and Biotechnology 2017" where the PhD student Cátia Pereira won the best poster communication award in the thematic symposium "Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Physiology".

The newborn IB-S - Institute of Science and Innovation for the Bio-Sustainability (http://ib-s.uminho.pt/) is a research partnership between the Research Units from Minho University, CBMA and ISISE (Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering), for the development of cutting-edge research and innovation in the combined sustainability of built and natural environments. 

The IB-S was inaugurated on October 11, in campus of Gualtar, in Braga and the official ceremony was attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, the Assistant Secretary of State and Environment, José Mendes, the president of CCDR-N, Fernando Freire de Sousa, and the rector António M. Cunha. 

The IB-S wants to put science at the service of a sustainable model of life, with higher quality of built and natural environments. It will also help to create spin-offs, promote post-graduate training and disseminate knowledge, together with companies, municipalities, associations, individuals and scientific and technological units. 

Exhibition Foto | Grafia da Ciência is hosted at IB-S

The exhibition FOTO | GRAFIA da Ciência (Photo | Script of Science), in display at IB-S, presents a set of words, created with researchers day-to-day laboratory material, which correspond to concepts that Science must be imbued. The idea for this exhibition was born from a CBMA project of dissemination and communication of science.

CBMA, aware of its role and responsibility in the promotion of knowledge, scientific culture and critical thinking, is committed to contribute to increase the perception of the population regarding the importance of Science, Technology and Innovation in the development and in the well-being of society.

Interaction between scientists and society is fundamental for the involvement of the population in the social implications of research, as well as for a better understanding of the underlying scientific process. Thus, CBMA develops and participates in initiatives and projects that aim to bring scientists closer to society, such as the exhibition FOTO | GRAFIA DA CIÊNCIA.

The design of the exhibition FOTO | GRAFIA DA CIÊNCIA is the responsibility of Inês Braga and Hugo Araújo.

Pedro Soares has published a genetic study that is "igniting" the debate on the Aryan migration to India. The researcher explains the study and the controversy in this report.

The impacts of extreme droughts can be dramatic. During August 2017 a team of researchers, including Ronaldo Sousa from CBMA, have been assessing the impacts of the 2017 drought on the critically endangered species Margaritifera margaritifera. Due to the extremely low flow conditions hundreds of organisms died near the banks of the Rivers Rabaçal and Tuela (NE of Portugal). The conservation implications of these mortalities will be further studied.
